Lidl chooses Prevented Ocean Plastic

Lidl have chosen Prevented Ocean Plastic to help support their sustainability initiatives.

Lidl GB will become the first UK supermarket to launch packaging using Prevented Ocean Plastic when new fresh fish products arrive on their shelves next month.

This packaging, made of material collected from beaches and coastlines around South East Asia that could have otherwise ended up in the ocean, forms part Lidl’s of initiatives to ensure 50% of packaging is made from recycled materials by 2025, and make 100% of own brand packaging widely recyclable, reusable or refillable by 2025.

The initiative will initially prevent more than 60 tonnes of plastic from being introduced to the ocean per year, the equivalent of 2.5 million plastic water bottles.

At first, Lidl will roll out the packaging across fresh fish products representing more than 50% of their fish lines, including white fish and salmon. Further plans include rolling out the packaging across the entire fresh fish range, and exploring other uses for the packaging across other product lines.

In the words of Lidl GB’s Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Georgina Hall, “We are proud to be the first UK supermarket introducing packaging incorporating plastic that would have otherwise ended up in the ocean, helping to tackle the problem directly as part of our commitment to prevent plastics ending up as waste. We are actively looking to extend this innovative solution to other product lines to help reduce the amount of plastic ending up in our oceans and keep our environments healthy.”

Raffi Schieir, director of Bantam Materials, the supplier of Prevented Ocean Plastic, said: “We are aligning recycling standards in at-risk communities for ocean plastics to deliver the quality and volumes the market requires while genuinely doing something positive about the ocean plastics problem. We’re delighted to be working with Lidl GB, Sharpak, and Group GUILLIN to help prevent plastic reaching and polluting our oceans. Plastic recycling is a rapidly growing industry and we’re proud to be working at the forefront, setting standards and helping to create a closed loop plastic economy.”

We are committed to strengthening the supply chain and scaling solutions for the management of plastic waste in the country.
