Patagonia chooses Prevented Ocean Plastic

Patagonia have chosen Prevented Ocean Plastic to aid them in their fight against climate crisis.

Last week, Patagonia launched their change over to Prevented Ocean Plastic materials for their range of top performing men’s and women’s running and climbing shorts. The body of the Strider Pro, Multi Trails and Trailfarer shorts are made of quick-drying 90% Prevented Ocean Plastic™ recycled polyester sourced from plastic waste recovered from at-risk coastal communities.

Vytas Gruodis, Director of Bantam Materials Inc., said, “We are thrilled and humbled to share that Patagonia has launched its new line of athletic wear made with Prevented Ocean Plastic recycled polyester. Together, we are collecting and recycling plastic waste from at risk coastlines around the world, preventing ocean plastic pollution at scale. Ethically sourced and traceable. Patagonia’s commitment to environmental responsibility is unparalleled, and we are proud beyond words to be chosen.”

Last September, Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard and his family announced that they were restructuring the company to direct all future profits towards fighting the climate crisis. “It’s been a half-century since we began our experiment in responsible business. If we have any hope of a thriving planet 50 years from now, it demands all of us doing all we can with the resources we have,” said Chouinard. The family handed over the ownership of the company to Patagonia Purpose Trust and the Holdfast Collective, a non-profit organisation that protects the environment. This choice has ensured that Patagonia’s profit will go towards their goal of creating a better future. And now Prevented Ocean Plastic will aid Patagonia in this vision.

Raffi Schieir, Director of Bantam Materials Ltd. and the Prevented Ocean Plastic programme, is thrilled to be working with the brand. In his own words, “Patagonia is a clear leader for sustainable supply chains as they have been using recycled PET in their clothing since 1993. I applaud their choice to openly support plastic collection from coastal communities that lack waste management infrastructure. We are all continents apart but facing the same problem. We will continue to elevate the supply chain and strive to be the ‘best in class choice’ in the category.

Prevented Ocean Plastic is a pioneering plastic recycling company developing locally customized sorting and collection infrastructure to underserved communities across the world. We are committed to strengthening the supply chain and scaling solutions for the management of plastic waste in the country. We provide high quality traceable recycled plastic to global markets to drive environmental, social and economic value from the bottle collector to the end consumer.
