POP Spotlight: MACK in 2023

By September 4, 2023No Comments

The team at MACK aren’t messing around. In fact, as the folks behind a planet-friendly homecare cleaning range, that’s pretty much the last thing on their mind. But MACK are determined to shake-up and rearrange things in their industry, and proudly declare their range to be non-toxic, not tested on animals, and vegan, among many other amazing things. It makes perfect sense that they also use Prevented Ocean Plastic™ in their bottles too.

You won’t have to go far to find out more. Prevented Ocean Plastic™ already did the dirty work and sent Ant McCourt, MACK’s co-founder and “chief naughty person”, some questions.

  • Hi, Ant! For anyone unfamiliar, please can you talk a little bit about what MACK do?

We’ve created a home care cleaning range, using clean ingredients, enzymes and good bacteria all wrapped in a water soluble sachet. We call them BioPods! Planet first was always a massive element of the MACK mission. Planet, People, Price and Performance are the MACK P’s in a Pod. We couldn’t understand the market’s position of charging customers more for a less environmentally impactful product. We believe that better products should be the default. Single-use plastic, harsh chemistry and toxic ingredients are the enemy to MACK. (As are the large corporations that greenwash – just saying!)

  • What have been the biggest hurdles when sticking to your values?

“The biggest hurdle we faced was actually changing people’s behaviours. Everyone talks a great game, but actually converting that talk into action has taken a lot of time and energy, but our message is getting through.”

  • What’s been the most popular MACK product to date? And are you able to give us a sneak peek to any new products that might be available soon?

Our ‘Down ‘n’ Dirty’ products have been a great selling range for us. Other brands in our space have all focussed on surface cleaners, but our products clean toilets, keep drains doing what drains do and clean the washing machine/dishwasher.

Our latest product is called ‘Re-Loaded’. This laundry detergent Pod is super concentrated and incorporates Notpla’s plant based water soluble film – it’s a world first! It took just under a year to develop this new technology with more trials than tribulations initially. The guys at Notpla have been amazing and so solution oriented. We all knew we’d get there in the end.

Anthony McCourt keeping it MACK.

“Our initial strategy was not to introduce or sell more plastic cleaning bottles to the market. However, it became apparent that customers wanted to purchase the MACK range but not all of our new customers had existing bottles. We had many conversations about the material our bottles would be made of- from aluminium to glass to bamboo. We made the conscious decision to keep away from the ‘twee zone’ and unanimously agreed that Prevented Ocean Plastic™ was the only moral option.”

  • What does working with Prevented Ocean Plastic™ mean to you?

“We’ve always believed in customers retaining their plastic cleaning assets for good. I’m a child of the 70’s, so it was either tin foil or Tupperware! Obviously plastic’s mandate has been lost since then, much to the detriment of the environment, especially the water courses and the ocean. Prevented Ocean Plastic™ is helping to mitigate the consequence of the overuse of this material. And for our customers, it’s holistic. It’s the brand they buy from, the products they use, and the bottle that dispenses the cleaning solutions. They are all part of the solution.”

  • Would you encourage other companies to work with Prevented Ocean Plastic™?

“I think that every business that includes a plastic product as a primary or secondary element to their offering has a moral obligation to make sure it’s made from Prevented Ocean Plastic™.”

  • Can sustainability and profitability go hand-in-hand?

“Without doubt. Let’s be honest, there is an initial erosion of margin but, with an increase in material scalability, industry education and corporate parity, there is no reason why these great initiatives shouldn’t be viable alternatives to the incumbent norms. At MACK we truly stand by our mantra- “Make a living, not a killing’”

  • What are you most excited about within the wider world of sustainability?

“The increased visibility and exposure of companies like Prevented Ocean Plastic, Notpla, and MACK meaning we are no longer considered niche. Our companies are becoming challenger brands to the industry dinosaurs and their fossil fuel foundations.”

  • Is there any clean-up job that Mack wouldn’t dare to take on- a truck stop kitchen? The toilet from Trainspotting!?

Ha Ha! Our products clean some very challenging manufacturing environments and have yet to meet their match!”

  • What are MACK’s ambitions for the future?

“To continue to work with great companies like yours – then, global domination!

Prevented Ocean Plastic are so proud to work with the team at MACK. We might stop just short of global domination but together we can continue to operate at the forefront for change, closing the loop of a circular economy, and making an impact on the world’s ocean-bound plastic problem!
