Spectra make Prevented Ocean Plastic commitment

By September 13, 2022February 7th, 2024No Comments

Spectra Packaging has announced that it will manufacture all future PCR PET products with Prevented Ocean Plastic as standard.

The environmentally minded UK converter believes this latest bold commitment is the best way to deliver fundamental changes that positively impact the environment whilst benefiting societies on the frontline of ocean plastic waste.

Spectra’s Sales Director, Jonathan Powell, feels the news is a significant milestone in the company’s 14-year history.

“From day one, Spectra has strived to be at the forefront of environmental responsibility, from how we conduct ourselves as a plastics manufacturer to the products we provide for our customers. Our aim has always been to minimise our impact on a per-container basis. Equally, we believe we have an extended responsibility for what happens to plastics at the end of their life, irrespective of their original purpose”.

He added, “Our partnership with Bantam Materials, who run the POP programme, provides a clear and unified vision that looks beyond reactive answers with proactive solutions to ocean plastic waste. We passionately see this as a genuine vision to protect the environment for future generations”.

Prevented Ocean Plastic recycled plastics are made from bottles collected within 50km of an ocean coastline or major waterway. Some of the most affected areas are: Southeast Asia, South America, the Mediterranean, Central America and the Caribbean. Here infrastructures are being overwhelmed by population growth and tourism. This combined with a lack of robust waste management infrastructures and collection incentives creates issues.

The programme prevents ocean plastic pollution at scale. We provide quality-grade robust recycled plastic supplies that support local communities. It also allows brands complete traceability of the recycled materials in the products. From beaches of origin to the final production-ready flake or pellets.

Proof of the effectiveness is in the data. For example, we divert over one thousand tons of plastic from entering the ocean every month. Evidence indicates that 80% of ocean plastic comes from land-based sources in developing coastal communities. At Prevented Ocean Plastic we work hard to help halt such issues before they become a problem.

According to Spectra one of the significant appeals for them are the socio-economic benefits of the programme. We commit $100,000 per day back to the communities we work with. We support and incentivising developing communities on the frontline of plastic waste to generate reliable incomes that sustain socio-economic growth.

Mr Powell said, “As a business, we are constantly investigating, trialling, and testing materials that we feel will help support customers who wish to do the right thing”. He added,

“The POP partnership is massively exciting for us, and we believe our customers will also recognise the environmental and societal benefits. Our commitment to POP presents a systemic evolution for Spectra, which we believe is an effective, responsible solution to ocean plastic waste”
