The NHS chooses Prevented Ocean Plastic

By October 23, 2023February 22nd, 2024No Comments

Prevented Ocean Plastic™ is superior quality recycled plastic. Collected in areas without the benefit of formal waste management by skilled first collectors, our feedstock is fully traceable 99% PET bottle inputs, which are machine and hand sorted, processed, and tested to meet the highest quality levels. Without that superior quality, and without our responsible sourcing and our regulatory compliance, Prevented Ocean Plastic™ would not have been chosen by the NHS

This summer Prevented Ocean Plastic™ was present as part of certain home test kit packaging. The plastic trays in each kit are made of 80% Prevented Ocean Plastic™ and the card box container is printed with our distinctive triangular logo and messaging about our material.

Our logo on pack even made an appearance in the NHS awareness campaign for the kits!

This is not the first time that Prevented Ocean Plastic™ has been used by the NHS. In 2020, Staeger Clear Packaging produced a high-quality PPE visor made from flake sourced through the Prevented Ocean Plastic™ initiative. These face visors passed a specific British standard and were used in NHS hospitals and by many frontline workers including doctors, nurses, the police, nursing homes, and the border force.

Last year, Staeger won an award in part for their inclusion of Prevented Ocean Plastic™ in their face shields.

The future looks bright in the pharma and medical space too. This summer, Klockner Pentaplast announced kpEnhance RM1, a new recyclable blister packaging made from Prevented Ocean Plastic™.

In their own words, “The nutraceutical supplement market now has a sustainable option for blister films with kpEnhance® RM1. This new film contains a minimum of 30% and up to 80% post-consumer recycle content collected from at-risk coastal communities and is designed to be recycled in the RIC 1, PET recycling stream.”

These blisters are traditionally made from PVC so this addition will help to phase out a problem plastic while also encouraging circularity.

Prevented Ocean Plastic™ prioritises quality and compliance in our material, and is so proud to be chosen by the NHS this year and beyond.

Prevented Ocean Plastic™ is high quality, certified recycled plastic that has been collected from coastal areas at risk of ocean plastic pollution. Used by supermarkets and brands around the world, it meets regulatory health and safety standards, is traceable back to source and can be identified on-pack through its distinctive triangular logo. Prevented Ocean Plastic™ is an official nominee for the 2023 Earthshot Prize, and counts Lidl, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Booths Supermarket as key partners, along with major manufacturing partners such as Groupe Guillin, Spectra Packaging, and Berry Global for offerings across multiple product categories, including fish, poultry, soft fruits, pet food, personal care, and home cleaning.
