Prevented Ocean Plastic is a quality choice

By February 21, 2025April 9th, 2025No Comments

Prevented Ocean Plastic™ is high-quality, certified recycled plastic that has been collected from coastal areas at risk of ocean plastic pollution. Used by supermarkets and brands around the world, it meets regulatory health and safety standards, is traceable back to source, and can be identified on pack through its distinctive triangular logo.

It’s a hard truth: When you put your plastic in the recycling bins in places with established waste systems, it can get mixed with everything else and while anything that’s effectively sorted can be recycled, anything that’s not sorted is very hard to recycle.

In the words of Prevented Ocean Plastic™ founder, Raffi Schieir, “The first thing to say is that all recycling is a good thing to do from any place, any region. It’s always good for a piece of plastic that’s dropped on the ground to be picked up and used again into a new product. In the case of Prevented Ocean Plastic, when we set up proper and effective collection systems, we’re really making a positive difference on collection. But it also gives us a business opportunity to collect this plastic at source before it’s been co-mingled with any other type of material.”

Our unique business model of separate collection at the grassroots community level allows us to organise better first and secondary sortation, readying the material for pre-processing and best-in-class recycling. This creates a sorted bale at our owned collection centres that outperforms kerbside collection bales in every scientific measure once processed.

The difference is clear.

LUSH has been using recycled PET- left- for more than a decade. Their switch to Prevented Ocean Plastic- right- is a clear quality upgrade.

Prevented Ocean Plastic™ is powered by an environmental and social push, but also the business opportunity to create a better quality of plastic that’s suitable for everyone, from Lidl fish packs to Louis Vuitton wine bottles.

We are still not putting enough emphasis on quality, traceability, responsible sourcing, and good working conditions. For the circular economy to work in a meaningful way, we need to formalise and create consistency throughout the recycling industry. We need to account not just for the critical reduction of plastic waste, but for its proper recycling and reuse.

Proper recycling wins when plastic is properly sorted at the point of collection.

High quality Prevented Ocean Plastic™ is a better choice for people, planet, and products.
