A Look Ahead: The 2023 UKBT Grand Slam Finals sponsored by Prevented Ocean Plastic

By September 6, 2023No Comments

The 2023 UK Beach Tour Grand Slam Finals, sponsored by Prevented Ocean Plastic™, will take place this week.

From the 5th to the 10th of September, the best beach volleyball teams in the country will converge at Bournemouth pier to battle it out for the title. In addition, the UKBT will be running a number of beach clean events in the local area, something that needs no athletic prowess to get involved in, only a desire to do better. The Prevented Ocean Plastic™ logo will be proudly placed around the venue throughout the competition, and members of the Prevented Ocean Plastic™ team will be attendance on the final day to raise awareness of the problem of plastic pollution in our oceans, and explain how our mission makes a difference.

Ahead of the weekend’s events, we spoke with Team England beach volleyball player and UKBT Director and Founder, Jake Sheaf.

  • Hi Jake, for anyone unfamiliar, please can you talk about the origins of UK Beach Tour and the competition’s journey to today?

“The UKBT was established in 2018. We aimed to create an all inclusive tour that incorporates tournaments for all levels of player from beginners to elite. We started with 40 events in 2018 and now are at around 200 per year.”
  • What can a first-time attendee at a UKBT event expect to see?

“Non-stop action from our amazing athletes and a party atmosphere on centre court. Our venues are completely free to attend for spectators.”
  • How would you describe the impact of messy beaches around the world on your sport?

“Beach volleyball is a sport that celebrates the amazing natural resource that we have in beaches. It is one of the most relaxing and beautiful places to be and when a beach isn’t treated right it is very sad and frustrating. We are a bare foot sport so when there are dangerous objects in the sand it is very common to see injuries on the tour. It doesn’t take much to put litter in a bin, even if it isn’t yours, so please help us keep these amazing beaches a safe and relaxing place to be.

Prevented Ocean Plastic™ are not only keeping our beaches clean but raising awareness of the problems caused by coastal pollution. We are an island here in the UK and many of our courts and tournaments are on beaches. Our competitors enjoy a safe place to play and want to help in the cause.”
  • Why did you choose to work with Prevented Ocean Plastic™?

“The Prevented Ocean Plastic™ mission is very much aligned with our own. We both want to celebrate our coastlines and they are working tirelessly to not only make that happen but make a change for good. The team at POP are extremely passionate and an absolute pleasure to work with. All the staff at POP have morals and values that I truly admire and relate to. We have a common cause and it is very enjoyable working alongside the team.”
  • Would you encourage other competitions and companies to work with Prevented Ocean Plastic™?

“Absolutely! I love Helen Keller’s quote, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much!””
  • As well as advocating for ocean bound plastic prevention around the world, how significant is it to UKBT to participate in local UK beach cleans and make direct, real change?

“It is great to raise the awareness of Prevented Ocean Plastic™ and their cause through our events and athletes, however action is most important! We want to be directly involved on the ground and our community will be there at every beach clean.”
  • What does the future look like for UKBT?

“Beach volleyball is a fantastic, fast paced sport that celebrates men and women equally. We want to continue growing our all inclusive tour into all areas of the UK as well as creating higher impacting showcase events in coastal towns and cities.”
