By October 30, 2023No Comments

This year, Prevented Ocean Plastic™ was proudly nominated for the Earthshot Prize!

The Prize, first launched in 2020 by Prince William and David Attenborough, is awarded to five winners each year for their contributions to environmentalism. It was first awarded in 2021 and is planned to run annually until 2030. Prevented Ocean Plastic™ were nominated by our friends at WRAP and we made it through multiple stages of the process. The finalists were announced a month ago and unfortunately we didn’t make it to the last stage, but the Prize Foundation’s continued interest in our application through several rounds of questions has been exciting and rewarding.

Prevented Ocean Plastic™ is built on a strategy of credibility first. Our team is focused on a mission to recycle, clean, build and elevate. But we will always welcome recognition for the Programme’s progress and achievements. An official Earthshot Prize nomination is no small part of that recognition.

And there’s more!

Last month, the British Plastics Federation highlighted Prevented Ocean Plastic™ at the top of their list of innovations in plastics 2023. They described our initiative as part of the necessary push for more sustainable plastic products, changing society for the better.

And earlier in September, Prevented Ocean Plastic™ was presented with a Zero Waste Award. Established by and now in their tenth year, these awards recognise and reward organisations for their efforts to reduce waste and tackle climate change.

And just this week, Prevented Ocean Plastic™ founder, Raffi Schieir, was announced as a one of 2023’s Meaningful Business 100. The fifth edition of this award recognises social entrepreneurs, corporate leaders and impact investors whose work supports the UN Global Goals.

The winners come from 39 countries and were chosen from over 800 nominees in key industries, including technology, healthcare, financial services, recycling, education and agriculture.

The year-round MB100 programme, supported by EY, Hogan Lovells and Babson College, is designed to help these inspiring leaders increase their positive impact through pro bono services, tailored workshops, expert mentorship, storytelling and exclusive networking opportunities.

Commenting on the 2023 MB100, Tom Lytton-Dickie, Founder & CEO, Meaningful Business said, “Congratulations to Raffi Schieir whose work at Prevented Ocean Plastic™ is an inspiration to us all.
We are at a critical juncture in the 2030 agenda and there is a lot of work to be done in order to achieve the Global Goals. Leaders like Raffi provide a benchmark in the profit and purpose space, and we look forward to supporting their work as they continue to scale and make a substantial difference.”

As one of the MB100 judges, Stasia Mitchell, EY Global Entrepreneurship Leader, added, “Well done to the MB100 class of 2023! It is inspiring to see such strong and impactful social entrepreneurs, sustainability leaders and impact investors who are striving to achieve the UN Global Goals. I look forward to seeing how they continue to disrupt the status quo and build a better working world.

Following a global nomination process, the award was judged by a panel of 29 experts, including Amini Kajunju, COO, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Center; Matthias Stausberg, Group Advocacy Director, Virgin; and Nikhil Seth, Assistant Secretary-General, UN & Executive Director, UNITAR. Each nominee was scored across five key areas: Durability, Impact, Innovation, Leadership and Scope.

The Prevented Ocean Plastic™ Programme is aligned with several of the UN Global Development Goals– Decent Work & Economic Growth, Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure, Responsible Production & Consumption, and Life Below Water
