Research shows consumers want better plastic packaging choices

When it comes to sustainable packaging, consumers are clear- there should be better, clearer choices, and more simple steps to help make a difference to the environment.

Kantar, the world’s leading marketing data and analytics company, polled almost 2000 shoppers across eight leading UK supermarkets to assess attitudes towards sustainability and recycled packaging.

Taking fresh fish purchases as an example of consumer habits, this research found that 62% of shoppers are actively trying to buy products packaged in an environmentally friendly way, while 60% are seeking better plastic choices, and the majority want to reduce their impact on the environment with 75% willing to make changes to their shopping habits to achieve this.

Ultimately consumers want to make better choices.

At Prevented Ocean Plastic, we’re on a mission to help with these ambitions, and create demand to drive the circular economy.

Less than half (45%) of the shoppers polled were confident they could identify in store which packaging has least impact on the environment. That’s why we created the Prevented Ocean Plastic logo.

This distinctive triangular logo shows at a glance the products that are packaged in high quality, certified and award-winning recycled plastic material made from discarded plastic collected from coastal areas at risk of ocean plastic pollution. Used by supermarkets and brands around the world, the packaging meets regulatory health and safety standards, and is traceable back to source.

Nearly three-quarters (73%) of the shoppers said they were interested in buying fish in Prevented Ocean Plastic packaging if it was the same price or product as with other packaging, and 58% said they would swap to Prevented Ocean Plastic packaged fish if it was available in their supermarket. Additionally, nearly half (43%) said they would buy the products in Prevented Ocean Plastic packaging because it’s better for the environment.

The research shows that purchasing Prevented Ocean Plastic packaging would make people feel like they are making a difference.

For consumers, seeing the logo means they know they are protecting the oceans and marine life from pollution, supporting people working in materials collection in developing countries across the world, cutting the need for more virgin plastic, and driving up standards across the ocean-bound plastic recycling industry.
