Prevented Ocean Plastic win Environmental Packaging Awards

By June 14, 2023One Comment

Prevented Ocean Plastic™ and our partners took home two prizes at the inaugural Environmental Packaging Awards last night.

On a night when Prevented Ocean Plastic™ Director Raffi Schieir was shortlisted in the Environmental Champion category, our longtime partners at Spectra Packaging were given the bronze award in the Personal Care category for their continued commitment to Prevented Ocean Plastic™, and Hana Group– who incorporate Prevented Ocean Plastic™ throughout their Mai Sushi range- were declared the Sustainable Brand of the Year!

Hana began a packaging trial in early 2022 on two sites served by the Mai Sushi brand, including Marks and Spencer’s headquarters in London. Then, from July 2022, sushi packs made with Prevented Ocean Plastic™ were delivered into a 22 further sites.

Fraser Cowden, Commercial Director at Hana UK, commented: “The Hana Group has been focussed on making positive environmental and social changes for several years. We believe that through innovation and working with our partners we can make a difference. The Mai Sushi brand has always utilised recycled and recyclable packaging, so the opportunity to introduce sushi packs with at least 30% Prevented Ocean Plastic™ is another exciting step on our sustainability journey.”

The awards took place inside the new Eastside Rooms in Birmingham. The event was held as part of the the Environmental Packaging Summit, taking place over the 13th and 14th of this month. Both events are part of the Packaging News initiative to promote environmental awareness.

The first day of the summit saw a wide range of industry experts updating delegates on issues including Extended Producer Responsibility, Deposit Return Schemes (DRS), E-commerce, carbon, compostable packaging and more. Dr Barabara Leach from Defra provided an update on changes to recycling and packaging legislation. Other speakers included Valpak’s head of policy, George Atkinson, and Coca-Cola Europacific Partners’ head of climate and sustainability, Sam Jones.

Packaging News are also behind the broader UK Packaging Awards, which will be held for the 17th time later in the year.

Prevented Ocean Plastic™ celebrate our partners‘ success at the Environmental Packaging Awards in 2023 and beyond!
